DETROIT – Schostak Brothers & Co. recently received a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star Award, after partnering with Linc Mechanical LLC on
an energy-efficient project for Laurel Park Place Office Center in Livonia, Mich.
“It is an honor to receive the Energy Star Award,” says Paula Goldman-Spinner,
vice president, director of Office Building Management for Schostak Broth-
ers. “With each endeavor, we strive for the most cost-effective, energy-efficient
approach in our building operations.”
In 2007, Linc Mechanical completed controls and equipment upgrades, replaced
21 rooftop units and added controls to the units at the Laurel Park Place Office
Center. In addition, roughly 200 variable-air volume boxes were upgraded with
new controls. Linc Mechanical currently provides the Laurel Park Place Office
Center with preventive maintenance service, which they have been managing for
the past eight years.
“The numerous upgrades we provided to the Laurel Park Place Office Center,
in conjunction with the maintenance we provide on a continual basis, have helped
lower the property’s utility bills by nearly 20%,” says William Vaillancourt, general
manager for Linc Mechanical LLC–Detroit.
SURVEY SAYS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENTS
GETTING MORE SUSTAINABLE
BLOOMINGTON, IND. – A growing majority of
NCAA athletic departments are making environmentally responsible and sustainable initiatives a priority,
according to a recent survey. The survey was conducted
by ProGreenSports, a business dedicated to helping
professional sports organizations become more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
The survey, which involved 73 sports facilities in the
United States, was reported in the June 2010 issue of
Fifty-two percent of survey participants described their environmental initiatives as a “high” or “very high” priority. This was an increase from 44% the
previous year.
The study also found that 83% of sport directors and managers surveyed said
they plan to place an even greater emphasis on environmentally sound and sustainable programs in the future.
Among the survey’s other findings:
36% of schools reported that their facilities are currently undertaking, or actively •
considering, a strategic sustainability plan with short- and long-term objectives.
Nearly 80% indicated that “key decision makers” in their athletic departments •
have a positive perspective regarding environmental and sustainability issues.
In a related survey among sports teams also conducted by ProGreenSports, 78%
of respondents said they have either created a plan to make their teams greener and
more sustainable, or they are planning to do so.
Both surveys also asked respondents what their primary concerns are regarding
the adoption of more environmentally responsible and sustainable programs.
“An uncertain return on investment was the key concern mentioned,” says
Stephen Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group and Sustainable Dashboard
Tool, LLC.
